# Storage classes

> View and change object storage classes, and restore archived AWS S3 files in BucketMate

Canonical: https://docs.bucketmate.app/macos/features/storage-classes

Storage classes trade storage price against access cost and speed. BucketMate shows each file's storage class, lets you change it, and restores archived AWS S3 files so you can read them again.

## Provider support

| Provider | Show class | Change class | Restore archived files |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AWS S3 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Google Cloud Storage | Yes | Yes | No |
| Cloudflare R2 | Yes | Yes | No |
| Supabase Storage | No | No | No |
| Tigris | Yes | Yes | No |
| Other S3-compatible providers | Yes | No | No |

BucketMate detects the provider from the connection endpoint.

## Available classes

| Provider | Classes |
| --- | --- |
| AWS S3 | Standard, Intelligent-Tiering, Standard-IA, One Zone-IA, Glacier Instant Retrieval, Glacier Flexible, Deep Archive |
| Google Cloud Storage | Standard, Nearline, Coldline, Archive |
| Cloudflare R2 | Standard, Infrequent Access |
| Tigris | Standard, Infrequent Access, Archive Instant Retrieval |

## View storage classes

The **Class** column in the file table shows the storage class of each file. It is hidden by default. Right-click the table header and turn on **Class** to show it, then click the column header to sort by class. The preview panel also shows **Storage class** and, for archived files, the **Restore** status.

## Change the storage class

1. Select one or more files.
2. Right-click and choose **Change storage class...**.
3. Pick a class. The current class is marked **current**.
4. Choose **Change class**, or **Change N files** for several files.

The sheet shows notes before you confirm:

- Some classes have a minimum storage duration. Standard-IA, One Zone-IA, and Nearline bill for at least 30 days. Glacier Instant Retrieval, Glacier Flexible, and Coldline bill for at least 90 days. Deep Archive bills for at least 180 days. Archive bills for at least 365 days.
- Glacier Flexible and Deep Archive files must be restored before you can open them.
- On a versioned bucket, changing the class creates new versions. Previous versions keep their class and are still billed.
- Archived files in a multi-file selection are skipped.

Changing the class of several files at once requires Pro.

## Restore archived files on AWS S3

Archived files, such as files in Glacier Flexible or Deep Archive, can't be opened, previewed, or downloaded until you restore them. BucketMate dims **Open** and **Preview** for these files and shows **Restore...** instead.

1. Select one or more archived files.
2. Right-click and choose **Restore...**.
3. Set **Keep for** to the number of days the restored copy stays readable, from 1 to 365. Intelligent-Tiering archive files don't use this setting.
4. Pick a **Speed**.
5. Choose **Restore**.

| Speed | Glacier Flexible | Deep Archive |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Expedited | Usually ready in 1-5 minutes | Not available |
| Standard | Usually ready in 3-5 hours | Usually ready within 12 hours |
| Bulk | Usually ready in 5-12 hours, lowest cost | Usually ready within 48 hours, lowest cost |

A restore creates a temporary readable copy. The file keeps its archive storage class. While the restore is running, the preview panel shows **Restoring from** the archive class. Choose **Check again** to refresh the status.

Restoring several files at once requires Pro.

## Limitations

- Restore is available only for AWS S3.
- Providers bill restores and early class changes. Check your provider's pricing before changing many files.
